Ventolin inhaler has a pronounced bronchodilatory effect, preventing or stopping bronchospasm, reduces resistance in the airways. It increases lung capacity and mucociliary clearance (in chronic bronchitis up to 36%). It stimulates mucus secretion, activates the functions of the ciliated epithelium.
What is Ventolin used for?
It is applied for relief and prevention of bronchial asthma attacks (including as part of complex therapy of status asthmaticus). It is also used as part of complex therapy for other chronic lung diseases accompanied by reversible airway obstruction, including COPD, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema.
How to use Ventolin inhaler?
Inhaler check
Before using the inhaler for the first time or if the inhaler has not been used for a week or longer, remove the cap from the mouthpiece by slightly squeezing the cap from the sides, shake the inhaler well and make two puffs into the air in order to make sure that the inhaler is working properly.
Using an inhaler
- Remove the cap from the mouthpiece by slightly squeezing the cap from the sides.
- Inspect the inside and outside of the mouthpiece to make sure it is clean.
- Shake the inhaler well.
- Hold the inhaler between the index and thumb in an upright position, bottom up, with the thumb resting on the base under the mouthpiece.
- Make a slow deep exhalation, clasp the mouthpiece with your lips, without squeezing it with your teeth.
- Taking the deepest possible breath through the mouth, simultaneously press the top of the inhaler to release one inhalation puff of albuterol.
- Hold your breath for a few seconds, remove the mouthpiece from your mouth, then exhale slowly.
- To inhale the second dose, holding the inhaler in an upright position, wait about 30 seconds and then repeat steps 3- 7.
- Close the mouthpiece tightly with the protective cap.
Do not be in a hurry to complete stages 5, 6 and 7. You should start inhaling as slowly as possible, just before pressing the inhaler valve. It is recommended to practice this procedure in front of a mirror the first few times. If you see “fog” coming out of the top of the inhaler or from the corners of the mouth, start over from step 2.
If the doctor has given other instructions for using the inhaler, the patient must strictly follow them. If the patient has difficulty using the inhaler, he needs to see a doctor. He may recommend to use a nebulizer with Ventolin to correctly apply this medication for coping asthma symptoms.
Is it OK to use Ventolin every day?
It is ok to use this inhaler every day but in doses prescribed by your physician. If your doses are increased dramatically, address your physician to correct asthma therapy.
How often can I use generic inhaler?
For relief of a bronchospasm attack for adults, the recommended dose is 100 or 200 mcg; children – 100 mcg. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 200 mcg. It is not recommended to use this inhaler more than 4 times/day. The need for such frequent use of additional doses of Ventolin or for a sharp increase in the dose indicates a worsening of the asthma course.
Can Ventolin harm you?
One of the most popular inhalers for the treatment of bronchial asthma can seriously harm patients. Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh have revealed that albuterol sometimes does not eliminate, but increases the asthma attack. Inhalers with albuterol, on the contrary to steriods, are used sporadically – only for the treatment of asthma attacks. There are a lot of patients who are afraid of hormones and continue to take generic Ventolin or Ventolin hfa almost constantly and even several times a day.
To understand the discovery of American doctors, you need to understand how albuterol works. The drug stimulates bronchial smooth muscle receptors. As a result, the muscles relax, the bronchial spasm passes and the air movement along the respiratory tract is restored.
The problem lies in the fact that this drug is heterogeneous – it consists of two isomer molecules that are similar to each other, like the right and left hand. Each hand has five fingers, but you cannot stick them into one glove. This comparison must be taken strictly scientifically, chemists call such isomerism manual. The “right” molecules of salbutamol are working, they enter the receptor like a hand in a glove and activate it. But the “left” was considered useless: the receptor was not suitable for them, like the right glove for the left hand. But, as it has now become clear, the “leftist” isomers spoil everything, interfering with the trigger. Only this harm of “left” albuterol is not limited. It interferes not only with the “right” molecules, but also with hormones.
Albuterol should be used as rarely as possible – only when necessary. When you succeed, you are doing well and your asthma is under control. If patients are forced to use this inhaler every day or several times a week, then this may indicate a worsening of the course of the disease, and they need to consult a doctor.
